The Mentoring Experience

Marcelo always knew he wanted to contribute to his community in some way. So after  learning about Mercy Home and its Friends First program, he joined as a mentor. Getting to know his mentee, Donald, and watching him grow over the past year has proven to be exactly the fun and  rewarding experience that Marcelo hoped it would be.

Donald, 15, sees Marcelo as a friend, someone that he can trust and talk to. Marcelo broadens Donald’s horizons by providing new experiences, such as exposure to other cultures. Both agree that the group events are a fun way to interact with other Friends First participants, who Donald refers to as “one big ol’ family.”

Marcelo and Donald have learned from one another’s values— especially that of family. Donald describes Marcelo as a family man and Marcelo admires the relationship Donald has with his mother.

Marcelo hopes that Donald will continue to explore his interests, and feels that their mutual commitment through Friends First will be very beneficial for Donald  in the future.  Donald, meanwhile, looks forward to good times ahead and the connection that he and Marcelo are building.
